President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, has challenged newly inducted Full Members to uphold integrity, competence and service as they begin a new chapter of professional responsibility.
Speaking at the 49th Induction Ceremony of the Institution in Accra, Ing Hesse said the Engineering Practitioner’s Oath was more than a ceremonial requirement, describing it as a solemn commitment to society and the responsible practice of engineering.
He reminded the new members that Full Membership came with both rights and responsibilities, including adherence to the GhIE Constitution and Code of Ethics, continuous professional development and active participation in the affairs of the Institution.
Ing Hesse placed particular emphasis on mentorship, urging the new Full Members to support younger and less experienced engineers. He said professional success should be measured not only by projects completed or positions attained, but also by the people professionals help to develop.
“If we are going to engineer Ghana’s future, we must build not only infrastructure. We must build people,” he said.
Under the Council’s theme, “Engineering Our Future – Do It Well, Do It Right,” Ing Hesse said engineers had a responsibility to put public safety, accountability and the national interest at the centre of their professional decisions.
He cautioned that technical excellence without integrity could have serious consequences, stressing that engineers must be prepared to speak up when projects are unsafe, protect public resources, respect the environment and refuse to compromise professional standards.
The GhIE President urged the new professionals to carry the principles of their oath into every aspect of their careers, from the construction site and laboratory to the boardroom and public service.
He said engineering was not merely a means of earning a living but “a means of serving humanity,” and called on the new members to combine knowledge with integrity, innovation with responsibility, and ambition with service.
Ing Hesse congratulated the new Full Members and expressed confidence that their commitment to professional excellence would contribute to building an infrastructure system, economy and society worthy of future generations.
