The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), the Engineering Council and the Ghana Consulting Engineers Association (GCEA) have engaged the Ministry of Roads and Highways on challenges and opportunities in Ghana’s infrastructure development.
The engagement, held in Accra on Wednesday August 26, 2026, brought together representatives of the three professional bodies and the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agboza, and officials of the Ministry to discuss infrastructure delivery, professional practice and the future of the road sector.
The Minister acknowledged the critical contribution of engineers to national development and described the professional institutions as important partners in strengthening decision-making and improving infrastructure delivery.
Discussions focused on challenges affecting ongoing road projects, including rising construction costs, outstanding payments, project delays and the financial pressures facing the sector.
The meeting also considered the role of consultants and contractors, with the Ministry outlining measures to ensure that consultants could continue to discharge their professional responsibilities without unnecessary delays linked to contractors’ payment certificates.
The professional bodies used the engagement to raise concerns affecting consultancy, contracting, project administration, maintenance and the broader environment for engineering practice.
Hon. Agboza called on engineers, surveyors and quantity surveyors to work closely with government to ensure that public resources allocated to infrastructure were used efficiently and delivered value to the country.
For GhIE, the engagement reaffirmed the importance of sustained collaboration between government and the engineering profession in addressing Ghana’s infrastructure challenges and ensuring that projects are properly planned, designed, supervised and maintained.
GhIE was represented by Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, President; Ing Dr Patrick Amoah Bekoe, Vice President; Ing Sophia Tijani, President-Elect; Ing Dr Enyonam Kpekpena, Executive Director; Ing Kwabena Bempong, Immediate Past President; Ing Naki Anowie Tetteh, Chairperson, Women in Engineering; Ing Leonora Otu-Boateng, Director of Professional Practice; and Ing Marion Dwamena, Sub-Committee Chairperson, Roads and Transport.
The meeting underscored the shared responsibility of government and the engineering profession to deliver quality, durable and value-for-money infrastructure capable of supporting Ghana’s socio-economic development.
