The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) proudly congratulates Ing Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams, FGhIE, a distinguished Fellow and Past President of the Institution, on his election as President-Elect of the West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO).
His election marks a significant milestone for both the Ghana Institution of Engineering and the engineering profession in Ghana, reaffirming the country’s growing leadership and influence in advancing engineering excellence, regional collaboration, and sustainable development across West Africa.
Prof. Adams was elected during the WAFEO–ECOWAS Inaugural Conference held on 15 June 2026 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He will officially assume office in January 2027 for a two-year term ending in January 2029, succeeding Engr. Dadley Decontee Toe of Liberia.
Congratulating Prof. Adams, the President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, FGhIE, described the election as a proud moment for both GhIE and Ghana.

A highly respected civil and transportation engineer, academic, consultant, researcher, and mentor, Prof. Adams has dedicated more than three decades to advancing engineering education, research, and professional practice in Ghana and across the African continent.
He is the Founding Centre Director of the African Centre of Excellence – Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he has championed transport research, innovation, and capacity development while mentoring numerous master’s and doctoral researchers.
Prof. Adams has also provided distinguished leadership within the engineering profession as a Fellow and Past President of GhIE. Beyond Ghana, he serves on the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) External Relations Committee, is Vice President (Academic) of the International Road Federation (IRF) Road Safety Committee, a member of the Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) Technical Committee, founder of the Transport Logistics and Smart Cities Network, and a research scholar with the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) Researchers Network.
His professional and research interests span transportation infrastructure systems, road asset management, sustainable road safety, public transport, infrastructure auditing, net-zero carbon transport, electric mobility, and environmental and social risk management. Throughout his career, he has led several high-impact regional initiatives, including the Transport Leadership Advancement Project (TransCAP Africa) and the Centre for Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Leadership (CSSTL).
GhIE believes Prof. Adams’ election comes at a pivotal time when Africa requires stronger engineering leadership to address critical issues such as infrastructure development, climate resilience, energy transition, digital transformation, and regional integration. His election reflects the confidence of the West African engineering community in his leadership and vision to strengthen collaboration among member institutions and advance engineering solutions that support sustainable socio-economic development.
