A delegation from the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) and the Engineering Council of Ghana joined engineers from around the world in Jakarta, Indonesia, to commemorate World Engineering Day 2026, highlighting Ghana’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive engineering leadership.
The Ghanaian delegation comprised distinguished engineering professionals, including Ing. Felicia Ankrah-Quarm (WIE Committee Coordinator), Ayishetu Osumanu (WIE Assistant Administrator), Ing. Pearl Essel (Deputy FAEO – WIE Theme 2 Lead), Ing. Isaac Bedu (Registrar, Engineering Council of Ghana), and Ing. Alberta Amankwaa (FAEO – WIE Theme 1 Lead). Also part of the delegation was Ing. Sophia Abena Tijani (President-Elect, Ghana Institution of Engineering).
Other notable members included Ing. Agnes Afi Fugah, Esq. (WinE Ghana Member), Ing. David Sitsofe Addo (Board Chair, Engineering Council of Ghana), Ing. Dr. Enyonam Kpekpena (WIE Committee Chair and Executive Director, GhIE), and Ing. Mavis Dede Allotey (WIE Committee Organizer).
Ing. Dr. Enyonam Kpekpena (WIE Committee Chair and Executive Director of GhIE) addressed the global engineering community, calling for smart, innovative, and inclusive solutions. She described it as both an honour and a privilege to represent Ghana and celebrate the profession’s transformative role in sustainable development.
Speaking in a video published on the WFEO website, Ing. Dr. Kpekpena emphasized this year’s theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalization,” noting that engineering is critical to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable societies. Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, she stressed that engineering continues to drive industrial growth, strengthen resilient systems, and advance technological progress.
She highlighted that digitalization and innovation are transforming how societies design, build, and sustain infrastructure. From smart cities and renewable energy systems to AI and data-driven solutions, engineering enabling more efficient, adaptive, and sustainable communities. She stressed, however, that inclusion is essential for innovation to truly transform lives.
As Chair of the WFEO Women in Engineering Committee, she reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring women engineers are not only represented but lead global engineering transformation. “Diversity strengthens innovation, enhances problem-solving, and delivers solutions that respond effectively to society’s needs,” she said.
Ing. Dr. Kpekpena called for expanded access to digital skills, emerging technologies, and STEM opportunities for women and girls, empowering them to contribute to AI, smart infrastructure, renewable energy, and sustainable industrial development. She emphasized that inclusivity is not only equitable but essential for sustainable development.
The Women in Engineering Committee remains dedicated to mentorship, leadership development, advocacy for inclusive policies, and fostering partnerships across governments, academia, industry, and professional institutions worldwide.
As the global community celebrated World Engineering Day 2026, Ing. Dr. Kpekpena urged all engineers to champion innovation, uphold excellence, and build resilient systems that serve humanity.
“Together, through inclusive and smart engineering, we can shape a future that is not only technologically advanced, but equitable, sustainable, and transformative for generations to come.”
