The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has held discussions with the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) on strengthening engineering education and professional development as part of efforts to better prepare students for careers in the engineering profession.
The discussions took place on 1 October 2026 when GhIE President Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, Ing Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, and Ing Prof. Emmanuel Kwesi Nyantakyi, Dean of the School of Engineering and Chair of GhIE Branch 2, paid a courtesy call on UENR Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako in Sunyani.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 3rd International Conference on Energy and Engineering.
Discussions focused on how GhIE and the Engineering Council of Ghana could support UENR in strengthening the training of engineering students and deepen links between engineering education, professional practice and regulatory requirements.
Ing President briefed the Vice-Chancellor on the processes involved in becoming a professional engineer and emphasised the importance of professional registration and continued engagement with the engineering profession.
He also appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to support the payment of professional subscriptions for more than 60 professional engineers at the university, in a move aimed at strengthening their professional membership and participation in the engineering community.
The GhIE President further informed the Vice-Chancellor that UENR’s School of Engineering would need to register with the Engineering Council of Ghana as an educational unit responsible for the training of engineering students.
The engagement highlighted the role of collaboration between universities, professional engineering bodies and regulatory institutions in maintaining professional standards and strengthening engineering education in Ghana.
