ACCRA, Sept. 2, 2026 – National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has commended the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) for its 2026 Ghana Infrastructure Report Card (GIRC), describing it as an important tool for promoting accountability and improving infrastructure delivery.
He said the Report Card provided a professional and evidence-based assessment of the condition and performance of the country’s infrastructure, enabling political leaders and policymakers to make informed decisions on infrastructure development.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah made the remarks when he received a delegation from GhIE in Accra to discuss the findings and recommendations of the recently launched Report Card.
The Infrastructure Report Card will put pressure on leaders to do things right because they will know that somebody is measuring their performance,
Mr Asiedu Nketiah stressed the need for sustained investment in transport infrastructure, particularly roads and railways, to reduce travel times, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and enhance economic productivity.
He encouraged engineers and policymakers to prioritise infrastructure solutions that offered greater efficiency, improved public services and value for money.
He also called for renewed attention to the railway sector, noting that an efficient rail network could complement road transportation and provide an effective alternative for moving passengers and freight.
On water infrastructure, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the sector presented opportunities for interventions that could deliver tangible results through appropriate investment and effective project implementation.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah further pledged that the NDC would engage the engineering community ahead of the preparation of its next manifesto to draw on professional expertise in shaping its infrastructure and development proposals.
He said such engagement would help ensure that policy proposals were grounded in technical knowledge, evidence and practical considerations.
President of GhIE, Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, F-GhIE, said the 2026 GIRC, launched in Accra in July, assessed eight critical infrastructure sectors: education, electricity, roads and bridges, railway, telecommunications, potable water, health and aviation.
He said the assessment considered key indicators including capacity, condition, funding, future needs, operation and maintenance, public safety, resilience and innovation.
Ing Hesse said the engagement formed part of GhIE’s broader stakeholder consultations following the launch of the Report Card, aimed at promoting national dialogue and encouraging practical interventions to improve infrastructure delivery.
The GhIE delegation was led by Ing Hesse and included Vice President, Ing Dr Patrick Amoah Bekoe; Council Member, Mr. Philip Kwame Aheto; Director of Professional Practice, Ing Leonora Otu-Boateng; Communications and Public Relations Manager, Nii Odenkey Abbey; and Communications and Public Relations Officer, Ms. Indira Teiko Nartey-Khama.
The engagement underscores GhIE’s commitment to ensuring that professional engineering assessments contribute to national policy, infrastructure planning and investment decisions aimed at delivering safe, resilient, sustainable and value-for-money infrastructure for Ghana.
