The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has taken a decisive step toward shaping the future of engineering in Ghana with plans to construct an Engineering Village at Assin Kushea, in the Assin North Municipality.
The initiative follows the formal transfer of 10.71 acres of land by the Paramount Chief of the Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI together with his council of elders to GhIE during a ceremony held at Assin Kushea on Monday, February 23, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Paramount Chief described the project as a strategic investment in human capital, particularly for young people in the Assin area. He emphasized the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in preparing the next generation for productive participation in Ghana’s economy. He likened the initiative to the planting of a tree for future generations, noting that the benefits of the Engineering Village will extend well beyond the present generation.
Receiving the land on behalf of GhIE, the President of the Institution Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse welcomed the partnership with traditional authorities and the local community, describing it as a strong example of community-driven development. He encouraged young people to leverage the opportunities the Engineering Village will create to pursue careers in engineering and applied sciences.
According to GhIE President Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, the Engineering Village is designed as a multi-functional platform to support engineering practice, skills development, and innovation. Planned facilities include an industrial park, an engineering museum, conference and training facilities, eco-park and recreational spaces, as well as residential accommodation. Administrative offices, staff housing, and support services will also form part of the development.
A key component of the project is its focus on early skills development. GhIE plans to collaborate with basic schools in the area to deliver practical STEM learning, including exposure to robotics and other applied technical skills, to help build a pipeline of future engineers.
The ceremony featured the presentation of land documents, unveiling of a GhIE site signpost and commemorate tree planting on the land by respective invited guests and organizations, and the presentation of DEXT science kits to schools in the community.
The event was attended by traditional leaders, schoolchildren, and representatives of GhIE, including the President Ing Ludwig Annang Hesse, Vice President, Ing Dr Patrick Amoah Bekoe; Immediate Past President, Ing Kwabena Bempong and the Executive Director, Ing Dr Enyonam Kpekpena.

Engineers and professionals from Ghana Water Company Limited, Telecel Ghana, Volta River Authority, Ghana Highway Authority, Fabrimetal, Electricity Company of Ghana, and Associated Consultants were also present, highlighting broad stakeholder support for the initiative.
