At a recent stakeholder meeting at the Engineering Centre, Roman Ridge, Ing kwabena Bempong (Immediate Past President or GhIE) and the project team leading the Accra–Tema Motorway reconstruction project provided an in-depth update on the ongoing works, highlighting progress, challenges, and next steps.
The session brought together engineers, consultants, contractors, and industry participants to discuss the current state of Ghana’s major highway projects including the N1, N4, and N6 corridors and to review key issues such as utility relocations, material quality control, traffic management, pedestrian safety, and maintenance planning.
Held as part of Ghana’s broader effort to improve national infrastructure, the meeting examined why the motorway built in 1965 requires full reconstruction after exceeding its design life and experiencing increased axle loads. Participants also explored the importance of tolling, proper maintenance regimes, and efficient financing models to ensure long-term road sustainability, while outlining clear action steps for the project team to enhance construction supervision, coordinate with utility agencies, engage affected persons, and prepare for future presentations on related expressway projects.
