Women In Engineering (WinE) Ghana Celebrates 25th Anniversary

In a celebration of excellence, the Women in Engineering (WinE), Ghana, marked its 25th Anniversary. The celebration included a series of events and activities that spanned the year 2024.

The anniversary was themed “Celebrating Progress, Empowering the Girl Child for a Sustainable Future” and it emphasized the need to empower the girl child for a sustainable future in the world of Engineering as well as increase the female percentage in Engineering in Ghana. It also highlighted the achievements of WinE Ghana and unveiled their bold vision for the future.

Among the activities that marked the 25th Anniversary Celebration was a STEM Talk that was organized for 200 girls in the Tema Metropolis to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girl in Science 2024. Additionally, a host of mentorship programs were organized including the GHIE Obuasi Chapter mentorship program to encourage girls in the Obuasi environs to pursue STEM education. Other impactful activities were organized throughout the year.

The main anniversary celebration took place on April 30, 2024, and it involved a series of interesting and educative activities. A Gala Dinner and Awards Night was held on November 30, 2024, to climax the 25th anniversary celebration of WinE Ghana. If featured special guests including Prof. Mrs. Esi Awuah, the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources,  and Dr. Stella Agyenim Boateng, the current Vice Chair of the Public Services Committee.

In its 25 years of existence, WinE Ghana has helped in increasing the percentage of female registered practicing engineers from 1% to 8%. It has also served on subcommittees at the World Federation of Engineering and hosted the Women in Engineering Committees at the world and African levels. WinE Ghana has significantly supported the country by advocating for gender equity in engineering and contributing to development projects.
