March 19, 2024
The Volta River Authority held its maiden creativity and innovation day on April 26th, 2023. The day, which marks the 62nd birthday of the Authority, saw the honoring of staff who took part in the maiden “creativity and innovation tournament” and generated creative ideas for the sustainability of the company’s operations in the face of decarbonization, democratization and digitization (3Ds) of the electricity supply business.
Most of the first 10 positions were swept by Engineers who are GhIE members. Notable amongst the award winners was Ing. Dennis Anyomi, PE (Mechanical Division) who won the 1st position with his idea on “Paperless System: Deployment of QR Code to Improve Service Delivery”.
The 2nd position was also won by two TPEs of GhIE – Ebenezer D. Ahiati (Asst. Mechanical Engineer) and Kennedy Kofi Gyenfi (Asst. Civil Engineer). Their creative idea was “Interactive 3D Modelling of VRA’s Hydro Generating Stations”. It aims to create virtual 3D models (digital twins) of VRA’s existing Hydro Generating Stations for enhanced maintenance and training.
With his solutions on “Digital Cloud-based Reporting Software Application” and “VRA Online E-Learning Platforms”, Ing. Alexander D. Reynolds, SPE (Mechanical Division) won the 3rd and 5th positions.
Derrick Appiah Acheampong (Asst. Mechanical Engineer) and Agyekum Frimpong Agyen (Asst. Mechanical Engineer), also TPEs of GhIE were amongst the top 10 most creative ideas. They seek to motorize Akosombo GS hatch covers, which have been manually operated for decades; and also provide electrostatic discharge for VRA thermal plants.
Our WinE members were also in the top 10. Alice Ama Erwuah (Asst. Civil Engineer), Priscilla Martey Odetsi (Asst. Electrical Engineer), and team also won an award for their creative and innovative idea. Their idea was for The Authority to use solar thermal water heaters in place of the traditional ones in VRA Enclave Residences. This idea falls in line with championing the utilization of clean energy, increasing our carbon credit, reducing operational costs, and increasing profitability and sustainability.
We congratulate the Engineers for creating solutions to help sustain the business of the largest electricity producer in Ghana.
Ayekoo to all GhIE members who won awards at the innovation tournament!
