OUR HISTORY
The Story of GhIE
The Ghana Institution of Engineering traces its roots to the early professional engineering networks formed in Ghana after independence, as part of efforts to regulate and advance engineering practice. GhIE was formally registered under the Professional Bodies Registration Decree (NRCD 143) of 1973 and and the Engineering Council Act 2011 (Act 819), under which it also serves as a licensing body.
Over the decades, GhIE has continually revised its Constitution, Bye-Laws, and Code of Ethics to reflect the evolving role of engineers in society. The first Code of Ethics was approved in 1975, with subsequent revisions in 1992, 2009, 2012, and most recently in 2023
The GhIE logo is formed by a perfect circle with a spur gear at the centre that is surrounded by a spider’s web. The spur gear is considered a recognizable symbol of engineering whilst the spider’s web, which is so slim and wonderfully woven to perform a function, expressesingenuity and strength, both attributes required in engineering to solve problems of mankind. The GhiE logo also symbolises the unity of all the disciplines of engineering viz Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical,Agricultural,Marine, Mining, Computer, Biomedical etc The Logo remains relevant in this era of the world wide web which has transformed the practice of engineering.
