GOVERNANCE
How the Institution is Governed
The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) is governed in accordance with its Constitution, most recently amended in 2023. The Institution’s governance framework combines strong national leadership with broad professional representation, ensuring accountability, inclusivity, and service to society.
GhIE relies on a system of committees to carry out its work more effectively (Article 13):
Standing Committees (Article 13.2): These are permanent committees that address core areas of the Institution’s mandate.
Special Committees (Article 13.3): These may be established by Council for specific tasks, projects, or time-bound assignments. They provide flexibility for the Institution to respond to emerging issues, advocacy priorities, or national projects.
Committees are typically composed of Council members and co-opted experts, enabling GhIE to draw on the diverse skills and experiences of its membership.
Branches and Divisions
Under Articles 4.2 and 12, GhIE operates branches across Ghana, each with its own Branch Executive Committee, fostering grassroots participation. Technical divisions (Article 4.3) and occupational groups (Article 4.4) ensure representation of all engineering disciplines and professional categories within the Institution’s governance system.
Elections for Council and branch leaders are conducted through transparent and inclusive processes. Leadership roles have defined terms, ensuring accountability, fairness, and regular renewal within the Institution.
Executive Committee Members
The Executive Committee (Article 10.2) manages the Institution’s affairs between Council meetings. It ensures the implementation of Council decisions and provides leadership on operational and administrative matters.
