Ing. (Mrs.) Sophia Abena Tijani, Fellow, Ghana Institution of Engineering (FGhIE), and current vice president of the institution is an experienced Electrical Engineer, Certified Adult Trainer, and gender diversity and leadership advocate in the energy sector. She has over 22 years’ technical and leadership experience in bringing significant energy sector and power market reach in Ghana and West Africa through her leadership and technical expertise.
She began at the Electricity Company of Ghana and then advanced at the Volta River Authority (VRA), where she held a variety of positions including Senior Planning Engineer, Technical Training Manager and Manager of Learning, Development and Talent Management. Her initiatives include competency framework development, leadership development programs, and high impact innovative gender action plans to increase inclusion in the engineering field.
International contributions include work with Mott MacDonald in the USA and Transmission Project Development Specialist for USAID’s West Africa Energy Program. As a result, she supported regional electricity trade and spearheaded implementation of high priority transmission projects.
As Vice President of Ghana Institution of Engineering, Sophia is looking to move the institutions forward in engineering, and has been appointed member to the Board of Ghana Railway Development Authority. She is a mentor for many and inspires young engineers to excite and contribute to society.
She is recognized as a national and global award winner such as 2024 CIGRE women in energy award and 2022 woman in energy excellence award. In Ghana and around the world, Ing Sophia is committed to continuing to drive innovation, promote inclusivity and influence policies that define engineering excellence.
