GhIE Committees List

The Executive Committee is made up of the officers of the Institution namely:

  • The President
  • The Latest Living IPP
  • The President Elect
  • Two Vice Presidents
  • Executive Secretary

The Executive Committee exercises such part of the authority of Council in the administration of the Institution as may be delegated to it. In addition, the Executive Committee is responsible for making recommendations to Council for transfers to the Class of Fellows. The Committee is thus required to appraise all applications for transfer to the Class of Fellows.

Executive Committee Meetings are held regularly every month to deliberate on issues and make recommendations to Council.

The Programmes Committee is entrusted with the organisation of all programmes and of the GhIE including Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes, the Annual General Meeting & Conference

The Membership Committee is in charge of the management of the GhIE Register. Thus the Committee is primarily engaged in determining which candidates satisfy the requirements of the GhIE Constitution for entry to the various levels of membership.

The Research and Awards committee designs policies and programmes to encourage research in engineering, science and technology and to recognize the achievements of engineering students, members of the GhIE, innovators and inventors of engineering products etc.

The Welfare committee is expected to draw up policies and programmes that will enhance the living standards of GhIE members of the Institution and promote interaction amongst them. The policies and programmes drawn up by the committee should generally ensure that GhIE members enjoy the respect of society and that the GhIE is seen as an organization that takes care of its own.

The Strategic Planning Committee is to review the GhIE Five Year Strategic Plan (2007 – 2011) and put in place a new one to be approved by Council on or before end of July 2015.

  • To Review Specifically the GhIE Strategic Plan vis a vis the “Engineering Council Act”
  • To Review Specifically the GhIE Strategic Plan to empower GhIE to still have control of its members regarding CPD, Annual Conferences, etc.
  • Any other Strategic Plans to advance the course of GhIE

Regional Branches are expected to cater for the interests of members in the Region. The Regional Branches are to assist the Council advance the strategic objectives of :

  • Ensuring the appropriate education of engineers and Engineering technologists as well as providing opportunities for their career and professional development.
  • Increasing membership and improving member’s welfare.
Specific Actions identified in the Strategic Plan include:
  • Facilitate and support professional programmes and activities at regional levels and for student members.
  • Encourage formation of student chapters of GhIE in tertiary institutions

The Special Committee is entrusted to pursuing and developing programmes for the President’s Special Initiative. The Special Committee should focus on the key thematic areas of the President.

Specific objectives for 2015/2016 Council Year

  • Develop programmes that will generate interest in engineering at the basic level, especially in High schools.
  • Ensure that the generation of our professionals are trained and mentored to keep pace with the growth and complexity of our infrastructural development, focusing not only on sustainability but also on its resiliency.
  • Continue to encourage our young professionals to pursue excellence in the practice in the practice of their profession, thereby discouraging unethical behaviour.
  • Ensuring and developing programmes to support the SADA effort.
  • Attend and arrange meetings with SADA Officials
  • Promote and develop all necessary documentation and stakeholder meetings towards Engineering Master Plan.
  • Arrange and plan all meetings with AGI and Building and Road Construction Association.
  • Develop local content strategy in order to engage relevant Government arm.
  • Coordinate with other professional bodies, i.e. Ghana Bar Association (GBA), GIA, GIP, Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), etc., on local content law.
  • Any other special initiative that may be assigned by President/EXCO

The Publications Committee is responsible for the production of all publications of the GhIE: eg. Journal, Magazine, Proceedings etc.  It is also responsible for defining all policies related to publications for the approval of Council. The Committee should help create and maintain the interest of engineering practitioners in the GhIE through the production of informative and exciting publications.

The Conferences Committee is entrusted with the organisation of the Annual Conference and all other conferences organized by the GhIE.

The Education and Training Committee defines the GhIE’s policies on education and training for approval by Council.  It also ensures the implementation of approved policies.  The Committee is required to ensure that candidates are properly prepared before they present themselves to be examined at professional interviews. This year, the mandate of the Committee has been shared to ensure that sufficient attention is given to the preparation of Technicians and Affiliates for professional membership.

The Professional Practice and Ethics Committee is expected to design policies to ensure that members who have qualified to the levels of the professional grades of membership, i.e. Full Corporate Member and Associate, operate properly as professionals.  The Committee is also responsible for ensuring that standards and guidelines set out by the GhIE in its Code of Ethics are adhered to.

The Finance Committee defines the financial policies of the Institution and monitors its finances. The Committee is chaired by the Honorary Treasurer who must be a Vice President of the Institution. The Committee is expected to provide regular reports to the Council on the financial status of the Institution through the Honorary Treasurer. Membership of the Finance committee is selected to include Chairpersons of committees of Council directly responsible for income generating activities. The Finance Committee is to assist the Council to ensure good corporate governance by advancing the following operational goals set out in the strategic plan.

The Properties and Records committee is responsible for the Management of the physical assets of Ghana Institution of Engineers. The Committee must ensure that records of the physical assets of the Institution are kept and it must draw up policies and procedures for their maintenance and use.
